Neil has expertise, skills and knowledge in his specialist subject areas of horticulture and floristry; these have increased and developed over the years due to his commitment to continuing professional development, and his enthusiasm to gain qualifications. It is this passion and enthusiasm that has led Neil onwards from delivering teaching and training at colleges (including the outstanding land-based Hadlow College), to now providing private training sessions and consultancy work for horticulturists and florists.

Wiring & Gluing

I am currently teaching wired and glued designs to floristry students who are keen to progress within the floristry profession. As many of the students are new to floristry, I am teaching them the basics and explaining the techniques and principles to them.

Whilst carrying out practical exercises the students are able to make up the designs using ways that are demonstrated, it is following practical demonstrations and workshop sessions that we critique and discuss the designs in more detail an depth often exploring terminology and its application.

Some of these sessions have highlighted that those new to the profession have not grasped that techniques employed in a methodology can differ according to their application and the way in which they are incorporated within a design. For example, both wired and glued designs may incorporate functional and decorative uses within one design. Wiring to support cut plant material within a wired corsage is normally functional (as all cut plant materials are normally wired and then taped), the stems at return end may be covered with bullion or decorative to add colour to this part of the design, this is decorative. The differences can be explained by saying that functional wiring is normally concealed or hidden by stem tape whilst decretive wiring is normally lef visible as a feature of the design and carried out using coloured wire.

In a similar way, functional gluing is not normally visible and could be used to adhere parts of a design together without showing the use of glue, whereas decorative gluing would make a feature of the glue used, possibly using coloured or glitter glue or by even making a form out of glue and displaying it within the design.

Examples of functional wiring can be seen in floral designs created by designers such as Gregor Lersch, Catherine Carter and others, whilst examples of decorative wiring are seen in work by designers such as Wally Klett, Wendy Andrade and others. Likewise many examples of functional gluing can be seen in designs created by Gregor Lersch, Linda Searle, Moniek Vanden Berghe, Ian Lloyd and others, with examples of decorative gluing visible in work by designers such as Richard Haslam, Peter Bodnar and others.

I use both functional and decorative wiring and gluing techniques within the floral designs that I create, examples of these are included in my portfolio.

It is only through studying and exploring that the differences between each of these techniques becomes apparent and clear, reference to other designers work and their interpretations of the techniques enable a clearer understanding of them and their suitability and use within designs. It is necessary to practice these techniques and their incorporation within a floral design to master and accomplish a successful result with them, do not be afraid to try them and use them within your floral designs. Have fun learning how to achieve them and use them with confidence successfully within your own floral designs.
